Primary and Community Health

Discipline Leader: Professor Grant Russell

The leaders will comprise one inpatient research leader and one community based leading practitioner.

This Discipline represents a commitment of Monash Partners to build, support and grow links between our inpatient services and the primary and community care services provided to our population catchment.

In the Australian health system, the structures of governance and funding contrive to make it difficult to build strategic and organisational links between primary and secondary/ tertiary/ quaternary health service and associated research. Over the past five years, Monash Partners has experimented with a range of links and relationships:

· Formal and informal organisational  links with the surrounding Medicare Locals
· Building on the research links between Monash University and Medicare Locals through The Southern Academic Primary Care Research Unit (SAPCRU) (a unique partnership between Monash University, Monash Health and the South Eastern Melbourne Medicare Local).

At this time - with the Australian Primary Health sector about to undergo a major restructure - Monash Partners has delayed finalising this Discipline until a partnership model can be developed between the future Primary Health network(s) covering the catchment population and the four inpatient health services within Monash Partners.
